The Gun Of Joseph Smith By Roy F. Chandler & Katherine R. Chandler

The Gun Of Joseph Smith By Roy F. Chandler & Katherine R. Chandler 108 pages
“Now, Tucker, there isn’t a lick of proof that Joseph Smith ever owned this gun, but it came from his home and that means something to me.” So saying, the old Mormon handed Tucker Morgan the small rifle that would change his life.
Tim Selman had been saving the gun ever since finding it in the attic of Joseph Smith’s abandoned home in Nauvoo—just waiting for the right boy to come along. He had felt impressed that Tucker was that boy, and so the mysterious boy’s rifle assumed a new role in shaping a family’s destiny.
The Gun of Joseph Smith chronicles that destiny in a warm, exciting story of faith, persistence, and courage. Here is the adventure—as well as the danger—of crossing the plains and the bittersweet decisions of a boy coming into manhood. Moments of tenderness and introspection combine with thrilling action and scenes of terror and triumph to create a wonderful book the whole family will enjoy.
Tucker Morgan is a first-class character whose growings and strivings are easily identified with. And his story, although set over a century ago, is in many ways the story of us all—our search for direction and our struggle to recognize divine guidance as it is given to us. Besides this, though, The Gun of Joseph Smith is just plain good reading.

Joseph Smith, Martyr, Prophet Of God By Francis M. Gibbons

Joseph Smith, Martyr, Prophet Of God By Francis M. Gibbons 377 pages
What kind of person was the Prophet Joseph Smith? From the day he first related the story of his vision of the Father and the Son until his martyrdom some twenty years later at Carthage, Illinois, his life was one of paradoxes. Few people who knew him could maintain an attitude of neutrality toward him. He was capable of inspiring the greatest loyalty in some, while arousing the most bitter enmity in others.
In this inspirational new biography of the Prophet, author Francis M. Gibbons declares that “while there is room for debate about the character of Joseph Smith, depending upon whose testimony one is willing to accept, there can be no dispute about the character and accomplishments of the religious organization he brought into being, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
Joseph Smith, Martyr, Prophet of God tells of the ancestry and boyhood of Joseph, the events leading up to the restoration of the Church, the trials and tribulations of the Saints as their numbers increased and they were driven from New York to Missouri, Ohio, and Illinois.
The author, a stake president and secretary to the First Presidency of the Church, explains his purpose in writing this biography: “It has been said that any organization is but the lengthened shadow of one man. To the extent that this maxim has any validity, one must search for an explanation of the phenomenal growth and vitality of the Mormon Church in the life of its founder, Joseph Smith.”

Raising The Bar, Missionaries To Match The Message By Ed J. Pinegar

Raising The Bar, Missionaries To Match The Message By Ed J. Pinegar 174 pages
In today’s world, the Lord needs the greatest missionaries who have ever served. But they must be worthy and prepared. And being prepared as a missionary means much more than buying a new suit and a new set of scriptures-it means changing your heart, your mind, your soul. It is the very essence of becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ.
As a member of the Missionary Programs Advisory Committee, former mission president, and former president of the Missionary Training Center, Ed Pinegar draws on a wealth of experience to teach what it takes to be a successful tool in the Lord’s hands, focusing on the new, higher standards of excellence recently emphasized by the Brethren. He discusses how to prepare spiritually by feasting upon the word, and stresses the importance of repenting of past mistakes in order to qualify for the Spirit. Brother Pinegar also teaches how to gain a desire to be a missionary, and the importance of teaching by the Spirit. Raising the Bar will be a valuable resource for all who are called to bring souls unto Christ.

Our Destiny—The Call And Election Of The House of Israel By Robert L. Millet and Joseph Fielding McConkie

Our Destiny—The Call And Election Of The House of Israel By Robert L. Millet and Joseph Fielding McConkie 157 pages
Every member of the restored Church is by definition of one of the Lord’s chosen people—that is, of the house of Israel. A clear understanding of the doctrine on this matter is essential to both the Latter-day Saint’s happiness I mortality and his or her quest for eternal life. This book interestingly and eloquently conveys that understanding.
The call and election of Israel goes back to premortal life, where it was based on individual faithfulness to gospel principles we were taught there. In essence, it was and is a covenant relationship—we made covenants with the Lord there that carry over to our present life. Noble, foreordained spirits such as Abraham and Sarah made possible the premortally planned lineage for the mortal birth and rearing of innumerable souls throughout the generations. Ancient Israel, by and large, was unfaithful to covenants both premortal and mortal, and was therefore scattered among the nations. As part of the latter-day gathering, many descendants of scattered Israel find that their mists of memory respond to truths presented by LDS missionaries, and they then make their own mortal covenants in the baptismal water sand the holy temples of this final gospel dispensation.
In this book, all of this and much more becomes not only a spiritual and intellectual education that interestingly imparts knowledge on a vital subject, but also a fascinating story that will make readers feel closer to their forefathers of millennia ago—in that sense turning the hearts of the children to the fathers. Even more important, it will inspire and help readers in their strivings to make their own calling and election sure.

The Divine Connection, Understanding Your Inherent Worth By Lloyd D. Newell

The Divine Connection, Understanding Your Inherent Worth By Lloyd D. Newell 275 pages
The Psalmist wrote, “All of you are children of the most High.” (Psalm 82:6.) As children of our Heavenly Father, we are endowed with divine attributes and blessed with the opportunity to return to Him again despite the trials and temptations of our mortal existence. This is our “divine connection”-an unfailing link to Deity that can direct the course of our lives.
In The Divine Connection, noted speaker and writer Lloyd D. Newell explains that our inherent worth is the basis for all real self-improvement. He writes: “We cannot get more worth. A larger house, a better salary, and an impressive investment portfolio may give us more net worth, but our self-worth remains constant. While our self-esteem is affected by the ‘ups and downs’ of life, our self-worth never changes….The more we realize our intrinsic worth, the less our self-esteem fluctuates, and the more we are empowered to change our lives and build our self-esteem.”
Unlike other self-improvement books, The Divine Connection gives a spiritual dimension to popular self-help ideas and techniques.
By understanding our divine identity, we are better able to face the challenges of life and unlock our infinite potential to become all that we can be.

Forgiveness, Christ’s Priceless Gift By Brent L. Top

Forgiveness, Christ’s Priceless Gift By Brent L. Top 160 pages
Brent Top has shown, in his book Forgiveness: Christ’s Priceless Gift, that even repentance—that principle which most frightens and discourages so many of us who err—is part of the good news we call the gospel. Repentance is neither punishment nor is it hell. In fact, the ability and opportunity to repent of our sins and mistakes is in itself a gift of love and grace from our Savior, and is in itself a cause for joy and rejoicing. Our proper response to learning the principle of repentance should be as the response of one dying of pneumonia who discovers modern antibiotics. Surely there is grief involved in repentance (who, after all, can be forgiven but the broken and the contrite?), but repentance is the remedy for and deliverance from our pain rather than the source of it. Brother Top shows how repentance is part of the process both in coming to Christ initially and in enduring in Christ once we are converted. Repentance is neither a one-time prerequisite for baptism nor an occasional punishment inflicted upon the wicked and hypocrites among us, but is rather an ongoing part of becoming like Christ and a necessary element in the everyday lives of all true Saints.
Of course, any principle can be distorted, and there are unfortunately  those who would claim that the principle of repentance allows them to sin while avoiding the punishment for sin. Brother Top carefully shows how this thinking is delusional and the practice impossible where the gospel principle of repentance is fully and correctly understood.

Temples In The Last Days By Royden G. Derrick

Temples In The Last Days By Royden G. Derrick 208 pages
“Let us lay aside the cares and worries of the outside world,” counseled President Spencer W. Kimball at the dedication of the Seattle Temple. “We can then center our minds on the things of the spirit as the great mysteries of life are unfolded to us….We aren’t just here for a visit. We are here to receive the word of the Lord.”
In this dispensation, as in ancient ones, the Lord has commanded his people to build temples, sacred sanctuaries wherein he could dwell, dedicated buildings wherein he could empower his faithful children with eternal truths and covenants. Written by Elder Royden G. Derrick of the First Quorum of the Seventy, Temples in the Last Days enlarges upon such themes, as well as upon many others: the purpose of temple work for both the living and the dead, genealogical research, the blessings of sacrifice and service, symbolism of temple ceremonies, preparation for temple attendance, priesthood authority, spirituality, eternal families. Rich with inspirational experiences, scriptural references, personal testimonies and quotations form the Brethren, Temples in the Last Days immerses the reader in this glorious latter-day work, showing clearly that “the temple of the Lord is a stepping-stone between mortality and eternal life.”
We go to that holy place to participate in sacred ordinances. Whether the reader is a first-time attender or one who has attended many times, Temples of the Last Days will help him better comprehend the “visions and blessing and glories of God.”

The Spirit of Revelation by Joseph Fielding McConkie

The Spirit of Revelation Joseph Fielding McConkie 136 pages
Revelation is one of the vital forces within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is the means by which God communicates with man and by which the Lord Jesus Christ guides his church and its members.  Current revelation is perhaps the primary characteristic that distinguishes the Church from other Christian churches.
Revelation is not only responsible for all the books of scripture, but also provides a witness to all things divine.  Our testimonies, our faith, our knowledge of the gospel, our righteous decisions and attributes are closely related to it.
The Spirit of Revelation by Joseph Fielding McConkie, associate professor of ancient scriptures at Brigham Young University, is a careful, inspiring examination of this often misunderstood subject. Dr. McConkie discusses such aspects as revelation and salvation, the types and purposes of revelation, preparation to receive the Spirit, seeking revelation, a personal Urim and Thummim, understanding personal revelation, the ancient and modern scriptures, of the spirit.
The Spirit of Revelation provides a valuable aid for those who desire to understand the Holy Ghost and inspiration more clearly and fully and who wish to obtain the spirit of revelation more abundantly in their own lives.

Seeking The Spirit By Joseph Fielding McConkie

Seeking The Spirit By Joseph Fielding McConkie 112 pages
The Spirit of the Lord is an essential and identifying feature of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Without it, one cannot have a true testimony of the gospel and its saving ordinances. It becomes very important, then, for every person to know where and how to seek the Spirit, to receive through the Holy Ghost confirmation of gospel truths and personal decisions.
Seeking the Spirit can help in the search. It offers suggestions on how to be worthy of the Spirit, how to recognize its promptings, and how to act on those promptings.
“Two assumptions underlie all that is found within the covers of this book,” says author Joseph Fielding McConkie; “first, that we can know the reality of God; and second, that to some degree we already know of that reality even though our present awareness may be very dim.”
Seeking the Spirit is an invaluable aid in awakening this knowledge.

To Your Health By Brent Q. Hafen, PH.D., Keith J. Karren, PH.D., Kathryn J. Frandsen & N. Lee Smith, M.D.

To Your Health By Brent Q. Hafen, PH.D., Keith J. Karren, PH.D., Kathryn J. Frandsen & N. Lee Smith, M.D. 296 pages
In the early part of the twentieth century, President Joseph F. Smith observed that the fruits of the Latter-day Saint religion “are flavored with some sweets of heaven, and they impart health and life to the soul.” Some eighty years later, President Ezra Taft Benson stated that “to be truly fit, truly equal to the demands of life requires much more than bodily strength. It involves the mind and the training of the mind, the emotions and their use and control. Yes, and it involves the soul and the spiritual growth, too.”
These prophets of God understood a great truth of life-that total health is the product of an intricate and intimate connection between mind, body, and spirit. To be truly healthy is to value and nurture each of these important ingredients of the human soul.
Using their extensive training and research in the arenas of physical, mental, and spiritual health, the authors of To Your Health have created an indispensable handbook for enjoying a vigorous, healthy lifestyle. Weaving together the many facets of well-being within a gospel framework, and using insightful statements from Church leaders as well as experts in secular fields, they make a compelling case for the mind-body-spirit connection. They write in an easy, informative style about many of today’s most pressing concerns, including:
• The Mind and Immunity
• The Disease-Resistant Personality
• The Healing Power of Faith
• Relationships and Health
• Grief and Loneliness
• Serving Others
• The Impact of Stress and Anger
• Depression
• Humor and Laughter
• The Healing Power of Spirituality, Forgiveness, and Prayer
…and much, much more.
Yes, the gospel can help us live longer, happier lives. Knowing how to use its power is the key…and you’ll find it within these pages!

Steadfast And Immovable—Striving For Spiritual Maturity By Robert L. Millet

Steadfast And Immovable—Striving For Spiritual Maturity By Robert L. Millet 166 pages
“I listened as Brenda poured out her concerns:
“’I can’t do it all. I can’t be the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the perfect Church leader, the perfect citizen. I’m tired. In fact, I’m worn out. I tell you, I just can’t do it all!’”
 Who hasn’t sometimes—or frequently—felt the same way?
In this perceptive and inspirational book, Robert L. Millet examines the human condition and concedes that none of us can “do it all.”
Our strength is finite, our emotional reserves are limited, and the world and sin grind us down.
Our hope, he explains, is found in the strength of Jesus Christ, whose atonement not only provided escape from death and sin but also remedies all of our deficiencies, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual:
“There is power in Christ, power not only to create the worlds and calm the seas but also to still the storms of the human heart, to heal the pain of scarred and beaten souls.
“We must learn to work to our limits and then be willing to seek that grace, or enabling power, that will make up the difference, that consummate power that indeed makes all the difference.”
Brother Millet cites examples from the scripture and the writings of the prophets as well as form his career as a teacher and Church leader to show us in real-life terms the strengths the Savior can bestow upon us.
The assurance we are given is that by relying wholly on the merits, mercy, and grace of Christ, we can achieve the condition we all desire—to be truly “steadfast and immovable.”

Alive In Christ—The Miracle Of Spiritual Rebirth By Robert L. Millet

Alive In Christ—The Miracle Of Spiritual Rebirth By Robert L. Millet 211 pages
“Have ye spiritually been born of God?” asks the prophet Alma. “Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?” (Alma 5:14).
These questions, posed in 83 B.C. to the people of Zarahemla in ancient America, have everlasting relevance to us today. But how are we “born of God”? Does it happen in a moment, or is it a lengthy process? How exactly do we become “alive in Christ”?
In this thoughtful and perceptive book, author Robert Millet answers these and other questions, explaining the miracle of spiritual rebirth. The author shows us how we can escape the pull of the “natural man,” warning: “There is no deliverance from this sickness to be found in pop psychology or in transcendental meditation. Willpower will not cut it sheer grit and determination are not sufficient. The answer is in Christ. In his atonement. In his liberating powers.”
Citing examples from the scriptures, from the living prophets, and from his own tender experiences as a teacher, a priesthood leader, and a husband and father, Brother Millet teaches us how to surrender our stony hearts and gain a new heart through the Atonement. And he describes the blessings, gifts, signs, and wonders that are inherited by those who truly embrace the Savior.
The message of this inspiring book is that a broken heart and a contrite spirit are obtainable. By the grace of God and through submission on our part, there is a way to enjoy the miracle of spiritual rebirth, secure a lasting testimony, and become alive in Christ.

The Incomparable Christ, Our Master And Model

The Incomparable Christ, Our Master And Model By Vaughn J. Featherstone 203 pages
In his ministry to the Nephites, the Savior said, “Hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do.”
In The Incomparable Christ, Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone explains the importance of following the Savior as our master and model. He discusses the savior’s role in the plan of salvation, the Savior and the temple, the Savior and emotions, praying through the Savior, the Savior’s mercy, the depth of the Atonement, the power of charity, our need to have Christ’s image in our countenances, and the inspiration we receive from the Lord.
Elder Featherstone writes, “This book is an attempt to put into words the love, reverence, commitment, dedication, and loyalty to Christ that I feel deeply in my soul” Then, stressing our need to rely on the Lord during the trials of life, he states: “Writing this book has helped me understand the love, mercy, and condescension of our Savior. He continues to touch our innermost lives as deeply as we permit Him. In our own way we tread our individual winepresses, for, as President Harold B. Lee states, we ‘will pass through tests not devised by human hands.’ But we need not do it alone.” Instead we can look to the incomparable Christ, the master and model of our lives.

Helping Your Child Stay Morally Clean By Allan K. Burgess

Helping Your Child Stay Morally Clean By Allan K. Burgess 74 pages
What is the major influence in helping a child stay morally clean? One study noted that “the factor that has by far the greatest effect on the private religious life of our youth…is home religious observance….The home and family influence is much more significant than that exercised by peer groups or by program participation. IN fact, the influence of the home, whether it be positive or negative, is overwhelming.”
In Helping Your Child Stay Morally Clean, Allan K. Burgess, a seminary teaching support consultant for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, explains the specific steps parents can take to help their children stay morally clean. Where did Brother Burgess get this information? He went to the source: the young people themselves, and to parents who have had success in this area of child rearing. He also went to those who haven’t been successful—to those who have made mistakes. The result is a positive, helpful book that focuses on the causes of immorality and on preventive measures that can be taken.
The author writes, “This book will emphasize how we can teach morality to our children. Each chapter contains ideas that have proven successful in many Latter-day Saint homes and powerful quotations from the General Authorities of the Church. As we learn practice these ideas and teachings, we will be better able to help our children remain clean and pure and receive the blessings that come from living the law of chastity.”

Peace, Be Still By Wayne E. Brickey, Terry B. Ball, Richard D. Draper, Todd B. Parker and Richard O. Cowan

Peace, Be Still By Wayne E. Brickey, Terry B. Ball, Richard D. Draper, Todd B. Parker and Richard O. Cowan 107 pages
In this thoughtful compilation, five distinguished authors discuss the writings of peace, hope, and comfort found in the scriptures. Included are commentaries on the hopeful messages found in Isaiah and Revelation, as well as Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants perspectives. Wayne Brickey, author of the introductory chapter, offers a present-day viewpoint: “Amid commotion, we, like the billowing waters, may be still. It is the greatest of latter-day ironies. By frequently coming under the influence of His warm and whispering voice, we may not only know that there is a great calm available. But that calm can fill our minds and anoint our own lives. W may receive it day by day, even in such a time as this.”

A Joseph Smith Chronology By J. Christopher Conkling

A Joseph Smith Chronology By J. Christopher Conkling 276 pages
What are the important events in the life of Joseph Smith, the man through whom the gospel of Jesus Christ was restored in these latter days? What was his day-to-day life like?
A Joseph Smith Chronology draws from the Prophet’s own writings as well as the writings of his contemporaries and of later historians to present, in a sequential, chronological format, the major events as well as the everyday happenings in Joseph Smith’s life and work.
The book was prepared by J. Christopher Conkling for BEI Productions, Inc., of Los Angeles, California, as the basis for a film on the life of the Prophet. Selection of the material was a subjective process, but an attempt has been made to present it with as little personal interpretation as possible. An extensive bibliography has also been prepared to provide the reader with a listing of more in-depth studies.
Of particular interest to students and teachers of the Doctrine and Covenants is the historical background surrounding each revelation received by Joseph Smith. The chronology will be equally important to those interested in general Church history, as it details virtually all the important decisions and occurrences leading up to and following the organization of the Church.

An Ancient American Setting For The Book Of Mormon By John L. Sorenson

An Ancient American Setting For The Book Of Mormon By John L. Sorenson 415 pages
“Where did the Book of Mormon events take place?” Ever since the publication of the Book of Mormon, its readers have asked this question. Only recently has enough information come to light to make it possible to place the book in a thoroughly plausible geographical, historical, and cultural setting.
In An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon, Professor John L. Sorenson presents a detailed answer to the question of the locations of book of Mormon lands. He cites extensive details from the book itself as it describes natural features, cities, routes and territories, as well as peoples, customs, warfare, and population data. Hundreds of geographical, historical, and cultural facts from the scriptures fall in to place as the geographical model is expanded to cover related issues.
The volume asks questions like “Who were the Nephites in archaeological terms?” “What might they have looked like?” “Who were their neighbors?” “How many of them were there?” “How did they live, eat, speak, work, and fight?” Plausible answers to these questions are developed by matching data from reliable archaeological and anthropological studies of Mesoamerica (southern Mexico and northern Central America) with cultural and historical information form the Book of Mormon. The analysis yields surprising insights on every page. Yet the book intentionally ask more questions that it answers, for it aims to stimulate, not to shut off, further inquiry.
Referenced to up-to-date scientific and scholarly sources, An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon stems from decades of research by a recognized scholar. While the words are probing, they are carefully weighed and the discussion proves to be very readable,. Since its publication in 1985, the book has gained recognition as the essential treatment of book of Mormon peoples and events in the New World setting. It remains a book that should be read by every serious student of the Book of Mormon.

During the nineteenth century of the Latter-day Saints engaged in a series of economic enterprises that were unique for that time. Most prominent of these was the United Order, a bold experiment in economic idealism initiated by Brigham Young on a regionwide scale in 1874. Though its immediate effects were short-lived, it remains a powerful symbol for Latter-day Saints, a vivid expression of the reform impulse that has been a recurring aspect of Mormonism since its founding.
Building the City of God traces the development of Mormon communitarianism and cooperative experiments from 1831, when Joseph Smith announced the Law of Consecration and Stewardship as part of a design for building a city of Zion in Jackson County, Missouri, a religious and administrative center that would serve during Christ’s millennial reign. These plans were cut short by persecution, but the Missouri experience of the 1830s set an archetype that has helped ever since to define for Mormons the appropriate relationship of individual, community, and economic processes.
This lively study of communitarian and cooperative experiments interprets such episodes as part of the ongoing process in which faithful Latter-day Saints are schooled through all-embracing church activity in those very qualities needed to make a success of cooperative endeavor. The authors maintain that Mormon communitariansim is by no means dead—as witness the far-reaching effects to today’s Welfare Program—and may, in fact, be gaining a relevance to contemporary world problems greater than at any time in the past.

Gables Against the Sky by Anita Stansfield  567 pages
The powerful and moving sequel to The Gable Faces East.
It has been nearly two decades since Alexa Byrnehouse and Jess Davies married and started a family.  Their twins, Emma and Tyson, have grown to adulthood, along with Lacey, who joined their family as a young girl rescued from the streets.  The Byrnehouse-Davies station has prospered, and the family is one of the richest in Australia, known for its exceptional handling of horses and abandoned boys.  Boys like Michael Hamilton, who seems born for trouble.  Still, he holds a special place in Alexa’s heart-and he loves Emma helplessly, hopelessly from a distance as he works in the stables.  Will their two worlds, now so far apart, ever come together?
In prose as vivid as the blue Australian sky, author Anita Stansfield expertly fashions a powerful saga of passion, betrayal, forgiveness, and ultimate redemption.  Buffeted by events and circumstances that threaten to tear families and even lives asunder, Michael and Emma discover that “love and hate are very close in the heart.” For Tyson and Lacey, the lessons of acceptance and forgiveness hinge on a fragile bond of intimacy that can replenish or destroy them.
In Gables Against the Sky, Anita Stansfield has created a superb work in the time-honored tradition of historical romance fiction.  Each page is a new revelation of love-and a happy ending is guaranteed!

The Hamiltons’ son, Jess—burdened by the guilt of being involved in an accident that killed his brother and sister-in-law—believes that life is no longer worth living. Living in his ancestral home, sharing the stories of his family’s history, Tamra begins to connect with Jess, and a cautious love develops between the two. A Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by B.H.Roberts

A Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by B.H.Roberts
1965, Brigham Young University Press
6 Volume Set + Index of A Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by B.H. Roberts.
It is copyrighted 1957 by Corporation of the President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Published by Brigham Young University Press 1965.
From the Preface: "'A Comprehensive History fo the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' is the 'History of the Mormon Church' that was published in the Americana from June 1909 to July 1915, now revised by the author and brought up to date of April 6th, 1930, A.D.
The Americana was a monthly periodical published by the 'American Historical Society' of New York, of which Mr. David I. Nelke, at the time, was president. The Americana had succeeded a bimonthly journal, known as the American Historical Magazine, published by the same society. and of a character indicated by its title.
The circumstances which led to the publication of 'History of the Mormon Church' in the Americana may be of some interest. A gentleman in New York, formerly a practicing lawyer in Salt Lake City, wrote a series of four articles on the 'Origin of the Book of Mormon,' revamping with some variations the old and time-worn 'Solomon Spaulding Theory' of the book's origin. These articles appeared in the American Historical Magazine from the September number of 1906, to the May number of 1907. Believing that the publication of this series of articles-- written with some skill and great pretensions at exhaustiveness-- afforded an opportunity for disposing once for all of the 'Spaulding Theory' of the origin for The Book of Mormon, the author of this History asked the publishers of the American Historical Magazine for the privilege of answering this series of articles. This was granted, and the answer was published in four numbers of the magazine, from September, 1908, to March, 1909.
When the final number of this breif series was published, the writer was surprised to receive an invitation from Mr. David I. Nelke, the president of the Historical Society, to write a detailed 'History of the Mormon Church,' for publication in the American Historical Magazine...
So introduced let the History stand as we trust it will be found, a comprehensive and true statement of the things that have occurred in the development of the New Dispensation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in these last days. That it is entirely free from errors no one with a knowledge of bookmaking would expect; but so far as the author's ability and industry and care could preserve it from error, either of fact-statement or deduction, it is free from errors of which the author could be conscious."

The Way to Perfection by Joseph Fielding Smith

The Way to Perfection by Joseph Fielding Smith   365 pages
“Be ye therefore perfect” was the admonition of the Savior in his Sermon on the Mount.  With this charge in mind the author of this book has prepared an easily understood and highly readable outline of gospel principles designed to help individual achieve this perfection.
For more than three decades this book has been a favorite gospel study of the Latter-day Saints.  It bears out the unchanging nature of the saving principles revealed in the Holy Scriptures which are the same today as they have been “through all generations since the beginning of time.”
Writes the author: “Yet it is a fact, as every Latter-day Saint can say, that these principles which never change are in another sense always new….Old and familiar subjects may be dressed in new clothes; they need not always be presented in the self-dame way; and it is always the application of gospel truths in human lives which gives them their vital significance.”
The reader will be delighted with the manner in which the author has dressed the gospel principles in “new clothes.”

12 Keys To Developing Spiritual Maturity By Richard G. Moore

12 Keys To Developing Spiritual Maturity By Richard G. Moore 131 pages
Spiritual maturity does not come naturally or automatically with age; rather, it’s a process that requires God’s help and our effort. But even with our best effort, spiritual maturity does not come quickly. It is a quest that will last through our mortal lives and beyond.
The apostle Paul wrote, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” For many of us, I is time that we grew up spiritually—keeping childlike things but putting away childish thing.
Drawing upon insights from the scriptures and writings from latter-day apostles and prophets, Twelve Keys to Developing Spiritual Maturity contains principles and doctrines that guide us toward spiritual growth. It also includes examples—good and bad—that can school us spiritually, aiding us in our desires to more fully follow the Father and the Son.

This Exit To Happiness By Lester J. Petersen

This Exit To Happiness By Lester J. Petersen 118 pages
This book contains a series of thoughts and ideas which have helped develop my philosophy and happiness in living. They are inspirational thoughts and gospel ideals to help us find “This Exit To Happiness”. The happiness we are seeking is found by: serving others, learning from others and communicating with our Heavenly Father. Christ said, “Come, follow Me”, by dedicating our lives to help others find the truth.
Throughout my life, I have been guided by many special leaders, including my father and father-in-law, who also served as stake patriarchs.
As a family doctor, I have used personal experiences to illustrate the fact that we all have trials and hardships in our lives, with adjustments these can become “stepping stones toward happiness.”
Hopefully, they will be beneficial to you in your daily activities and pursuit of happiness.

Live The Good Life By Thomas S. Monson

Live The Good Life By Thomas S. Monson 135 pages
Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where do we go after we leave this life?
“When compared to these eternal verities, the questions of daily living are really rather trivial,” writes Thomas S. Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Live the Good Life, President Monson shares personal experiences and gospel truths that can add to our understanding of the purpose of life and how we might find true happiness and enjoy “the good life.” Among his messages are these:
“To reach, to teach, to touch the precious souls whom our Father has prepared for His message is a monumental task. Success is rarely simple. Generally it is preceded by tears, trials, trust, and testimony.”
“Life is a sea upon which the proud are humbled, the shirker is exposed, and the leader is revealed. To sail it safely, …we need to learn by the experience of others, to stand firm for principles, to broaden our interests, and to be reliable in our discharge of duty.”
“Life’s journey is not traveled on a freeway devoid of obstacles, pitfalls, and snares. Rather, it is a pathway marked by forks and turnings. Decisions are constantly before us. To make them wisely, courage is needed: the courage to say no, the courage to say yes.”
Live the Good Life is a book to be read and treasured by all who seek answers to important questions, answers that point the way to eternal happiness.

Bittersweet, True Stories of Decisions that Shaped Eternal Paths By Mike Berger

Bittersweet, True Stories of Decisions that Shaped Eternal Paths By Mike Berger
This book highlights the everyday decisions that shape our lives. Through the use of vivid word-pictures, the author tells of people torn between crucial choices and facing the mixture of emotions that pull at each of us at that moment of decision. He calls that point Bittersweet.
This book picks up on the theme of Testimony-Fragile Thread, Eternal Fabric, Mike’s first book for Latter-day Saint readers. He points out that spiritual heights and a personal relationship with the Lord are not reserved for an elite group. Those goals are within the grasp of anyone who will seek them.
It may appear that the road is hard to some and easy to others, but it is not given to us to know what obstacles lie in the way, or what decisions must be made by ourselves or others. We only know that each of us will face the test. These stories offer insights, a guide, an example and a word of encouragement as we, too, meet our own Bittersweet moments.
Mike Berger is a master storyteller, with rare ability to write for all ages. His stories in Bittersweet cover many themes: approaching death, the challenge of teaching, cheating, the promptings of the spirit, divorce, being lost in the wilderness, forgiveness, drugs, the temptations of the new morality, the real meaning of winning, and much, much more. Twenty-four stories are blended into a rich offering that will excite laughter, bring tears, and cause the deep introspection that changes lives.

The Mormon Faith—A New Look At Christianity By Robert L. Millet

The Mormon Faith—A New Look At Christianity By Robert L. Millet
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded on April 6, 1830, with six official members. Sociologists of religion project that membership in the year 2080 could be somewhere between 60 million and 265 million. Such continuing growth cannot be entirely explained by pointing to “the good life” practiced by the members of the Church. In fact, their theology is what often strikes a responsive chord in the minds and hearts of interested people. Further, Latter-day Saints believe strongly that their style of life grows out of their theology; we cannot really understand why they do what they do until we understand what they believe. This book therefore emphasizes what most people know least about the Mormons—their doctrine and their theology. Millions have heard about their health code, about polygamy, about Brigham Young and the exodus across the plains, about their generally conservative political posture, about their welfare program, and even about their athletes and entertainers. But few know about
• The LDS concept of God;
• Their teachings about Jesus Christ;
• The LDS view of the canon of scripture;
• Joseph Smith’s translation of the Bible;
• LDS teachings about the premortal nature of men and women;
• The purpose of LDS temples; or
• The LDS view of life after death.
Robert L. Millet, professor of religion and for many years dean of Religious Education at Brigham Young University, discusses these and many other matters, with an emphasis on fundamental doctrines and practices. Dr. Millet writes, “Many in the religious world have taken the time to learn about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or as it is more popularly known, Mormonism. Sadly, the polarization of people by available literature on Joseph Smith and the LDS faith—whether antagonistic of apologetic—has prevented many who have sincere interest in the Latter-day Saint experience from receiving a balanced presentation. One need not become either a convert to or a crusader for Mormonism to understand the phenomenon or the people. This book is written not to convert but to aid in understanding. And if anything is needed in this complex and confusing world, it is understanding.”
Whether one chooses to pursue a study of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints out of sheer curiosity or more academically from a sociological, historical, anthropological, or theological point of view, there is a great deal to investigate. The movement that began as a frontier faith will undoubtedly continue in a healthy and unhindered fashion to influence the religious world.
